What Height Should a Bedside Table Be?

When it comes to outfitting your bedroom, choosing the right bedside table is not just about aesthetics; it's about functionality and comfort. Among the myriad of decisions to make, determining the ideal height of your bedside table is paramount. Here’s a thorough examination to ensure you get it just right for your home.

The average height of a bedside table here in the UK is 50 – 70cm (20-30 inches).

1. Prioritize Ergonomic Comfort:

The height of your bedside table should seamlessly integrate with your bed, offering convenience without compromise. Typically, aim for your bedside table to sit approximately 12-15 cm above or below the top edge of your bed. This positioning ensures convenient access to essentials like your phone or a midnight drink without any awkward stretching or reaching.

2. Strategic Lamp Placement:

Illuminate your bedtime sanctuary with a well-placed lamp atop your bedside table. Opt for a height that positions the lampshade at eye level when you're seated in bed. This strategic placement not only provides optimal lighting for reading but also contributes to the overall ambiance of your space.

3. Harmonize with Proportions and Aesthetics:

Consider the visual harmony of your bedroom, for that all important feng shui. Your bedside table should complement the proportions and colours of your bed and other furnishings, creating a cohesive and visually appealing environment. Strive for a balance that enhances the overall aesthetics of the room. Don’t be afraid to be creative and choose bold colours for your bedsides. The right complimenting choices décor can really bring life to an otherwise average room. Blue bedsides fit well with whites and yellows. Yellow bedsides with charcoal and greys, whilst pinks sync well with various shades of blue.

4. Tailor to Accessibility Needs:

Your bedside table should cater to your unique lifestyle and requirements. What do you keep next to your bed, within the table’s drawers? Whether you prioritize ease of reach, additional storage capacity, or multifunctionality, select a height that aligns with your practical needs and enhances your daily routine.

5. Go for a theme:

Some of the most memorable rooms I have rested my eyes in had a tastefully themed décor. Some representing far flung countries that remind the designer of a past trip or holiday.

Examples:

Coastal Retreat: At a beachside cottage, the bedroom featured nautical decor with blue and white hues, seashell accents, evoking a serene coastal vibe. The furniture throughout was mainly of a driftwood nature but the bedrooms had clean white designed chests, wardrobes and bedsides.

Rustic Charm: In a countryside inn, the bedroom boasted rustic decor with exposed wooden beams, and earthy tones, creating a cozy and inviting ambiance reminiscent of a rustic cabin. The furniture was predominantly rustic oak, a waxed finish that really added warmth.

Indian Inspiration: After a trip to India, friends of mine decided to create memories of their holiday by creating a themed room in their renovated house. The bedroom featured luxurious Indian décor with ornate carved headboards, jewel-toned silk bedding, and intricate Rajasthani wall art, creating a sumptuous and regal ambiance. The bedsides were also intricately carved in a style that really demanded attention.
